GameSpot has just released four new gameplay videos giving a taste of what to expect from Midway's upcoming fighting game, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon! In these four videos, a variety of kombatants face off in a variety of stages, showing off such things as air kombat, multi-level stages, and even a pair of death traps. The roster includes:

Gameplay Movie 1: Shinnok takes on Stryker in Goro's Lair, followed by Stryker and Sub- Zero (in his Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance ninja outdit) in the Prison, followed by Jarek and Reiko, followed by Reiko and Sektor in the Wastelands.
Gameplay Movie 2: Fujin takes on Sektor in the Bell Tower, followed by Shinnok and Fujin, followed by Fujin and a masked warrior (Rain or Ermac, perhaps?) in an unknown arena, followed by the unknown warrior and Kai in Goro's Lair, followed by Sheeva and Sareena.
Gameplay Movie 3: Sheeva and Sareena pick up where they left off from Gameplay Movie 2, followed by Rain and Shao Kahn in the Subway, followed by Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the unknown arena, where Scorpion does his treadmill impression in the very end...
Gameplay Movie 4: Rain and Shao Kahn pick up where they left off in the Subway, followed by Shao Kahn making sure Jarek catches the train (or, to be more precisely, making sure the train catches Jarek)...

The videos are available for download to registered GameSpot members, and GameSpot Complete members can download them in high-quality. The standard size for the low-res videos is 11.9 MB, and the size of the high-res videos is 26.6 MB. Non-subscribers can stream the videos. To download or stream the videos, click here, and choose Gameplay Movies 1-4.

News: Falcoon interview
May 08, 2006, 10:18 AM
by brandon, via Falcoon - [p]

A few days ago, Iggy translated an interview with Falcoon, SNK artist and producer. Here are some of the most interesting points covered.

His opinion of KOF Maximum Impact is that "it's just for fun. It's supposed to be a fun game". Even if the game can be played online, they focused on the single player experience, so the lonely player would have a lot of things to do.
KOF MI is definitely set in a different universe than the regular KOF series. This means nearly all characters could potentially appear, even those who are dead in the regular KOF series (like the Orochis, for example).
KOF MI3 is scheduled for the PS3. He already has some ideas for it, and for eventual sequels should the game sell well.
The anime KOF Another Day was an experiment and an advertisement for MI2 and KOF XI. It's not cannon, and it doesn't mean the two universes are close, nor that Ash will appear in MI and Alba in XII. They have no plans right now to make another anime.
The US name change of MI2 to KOF 2006 has been made to reflect the different market, like Ryûkô=>AoF or Garô=>Fatal Fury. The decision wasn't made by Falcoon, and he doesn't seem to appreciate it much, nor does he seem to really care.
MS6 is the last MS on Atomiswave.
They don't plan to make a real fighter on PSP nor DS. The studies show many players use their PSP at home, so there is little meaning to making a game on PSP if the players would rather play one on PS2.
The name "KOF XII" is not definite, but the game is definitely being worked on, which Nona implied earlier (stating he'd be the artist on a new arcade game).
No more DJ Station, but they would like to continue with the CD dramas.
The reason most voices in Ken Samu were changed was because the format was too old to sound good on AW.
There won't be a sequel to Last Blade.
They would like to port the HNG64 games to a current generation system, but they can't because... They don't have any data anymore. It has disappeared. They would need to buy a board and games to begin with. But they would like to, even though they know they would sell very low quantities.
They don't want to ditch 2D yet. They think 2D fighting games are still interesting. They also talk about a possible collaboration with Arc System. They would like to, even though it appears quite difficult to do.
They say if the 2D genre was to disappear, they want to be the last maker to make 2D games.

According to the Arc Systems blog, there will be a 'big announcement for fans' in the new famitsu, which streets May 19th. It's probably just Guilty Gear XXX, but hey! You never know. Then again, it could just be the new game Recap mentionede below. But lets keep those fingers crossed. Thanks to Iggy on the MMC board for finding it.

As E3 draws ever nearer, Midway has offered a little treat to the fans. On the official Mortal Kombat: Armageddon website, they have posted a render of one of the classic arenas that will be returning to Mortal Kombat: Armageddon: Goro's Lair!
In addition, the site has three greyed out images, with a caption above them that says, "More Kontent on May 10, 2006". We'll be reporting from the E3 show floor on that day, but we'll also keep an eye on the site; we'll keep you all updated.

bon je poste tout ca tt a l'heure ;D

We're in Los Angeles, getting ready to start the first day of E3. However, it appears the folks at Midway have already been hard at work, as the official MK: Armageddon site already has the promised "more kontent" posted! They have posted two renders and the official E3 trailer! The renders shown the Battle Arena, which looks to be Shao Kahn's Arena from Mortal Kombat II, and the Lumber Mill.

The official E3 trailer expands on what we have already seen; for example, the opening cinematic with both sides rushing at each other has been expanded to show such fights as Sub-Zero and Scorpion clashing swords, Shinnok pinning a dark/evil Raiden to the ground using his summoned skeletal hands, and Baraka and Kung Lao engaging in some air kombat of their own. The trailer then shows myriad gameplay, including Fujin kicking Goro down a flight of steps to another arena, among others. Kreate-a-kombatant is also shown, where it's seen that as stated before in interviews, people will be able to make non-human kombatants. Konquest mode is briefly touched upon as well, showing Taven fighting some Black Dragon thugs and speaking with Sub-Zero. The trailer is two minutes, two seconds in format, and is available in Windows Media format.

Alors patience.

E3 2006: Golden Axe Lives!
SEGA revives the old school once again. Let the crazy sound effects begin!

by Douglass C. Perry

May 10, 2006 - SEGA Entertainment today warmed old school gamers' hearts with the announcement of a great, beloved side-scrolling classic remake with Golden Axe for next-generation systems.

Designed for Xbox 360 and

PS3, Golden Axe is in development by the newly acquired San Francisco studio, Secret Level. The new game is created with action- RPG elements and awesome old favorite aspects such as the ability to recruit allies, fight in ranged battles, charge into close combat, or mount freaky fantastical creatures and blast through enemy lines.

The new storyline is very similar to the ancient 1989 side-scroller: A band of "Riders" embark on a quest to crush and defeat the enemy before their race becomes extinct. Doesn't exactly sound deep, but does it need to? Players can wield fantastic weapons or cast magic spells to pummel mindless hordes of enemies.

"Golden Axe is one of our most treasured brands and is a complete re-imagining of the story that will take gamers on an unforgettable journey," said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president of marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "The vision we have for the remake of Golden Axe is nothing short of remarkable and it can only be realized on the PlayStation 3 system and Xbox 360."

Simply titled "Golden Axe," SEGA's risen-from-the-dead arcade game is due in 2007 on Xbox 360 and PS3.

After Burner Climax JAP Termin

- Release: 2007 (Europa)
CLICK (PS3IGN: 'E3 2006: Sega Rally Revo')

Sega Sammy Profit Surges 31 Percent For Year
Representatives from Japanese-headquartered pachinko, arcade game and video game firm Sega Sammy Holdings have reported the company’s results for the year ended March 31, 2006. The company experienced a 31 percent increase in net profit, as a decline in sales generated by its pachinko slot machines was offset by revenue derived from sales of video games as well as its arcade game business.

The company posted a net profit of ¥66.2 billion ($601.3m), an increase from ¥50.6 billion ($459.6m) posted a year earlier. Operating profit grew 13 percent to ¥119.1 billion ($1.08b), resulting from a 7 percent increase in overall sales to ¥553.2 billion ($5.02b).

Though Sega Sammy's pachinko and arcade business are still its biggest contributor by far, video game software sales during fiscal 2005 totaled 16.4 million units, comprising 4.1 million copies in Japan, 6.14 million in the U.S., 6.06 million in Europe, and 100,000 in other regions.

In Japan, sales of The King of Beetle Mushiking: Road to Greatest Champion for the Game Boy Advance exceeded expectations, while other titles such as Noryoku Trainer Portable, Pro Yakyu Team wo Tsukuro! 3, Pro Soccer Club wo Tsukuro! Europe Championship, and Ryu Ga Gotoku, the latest title from Toshihiro Nagoshi (and soon to be released in the West as Yakuza) were also strong sellers. Outside of Japan, Shadow the Hedgehog, which sold more than 1 million copies, and other titles from the Sonic franchise performed favorably for the company.

Looking ahead, Sega Sammy Group, which consists of 82 subsidiaries and 17 affiliates, stated that it will undertake aggressive corporate restructuring and business expansion measures in order to bolster development of the console business in growing overseas markets. The Group "plans to purchase competitive titles and brands, and acquire overseas development companies in order to obtain and increase its capacity for development", as seen by multiple recent acquisitions, including Sports Interactive and Secret Level.

For fiscal 2006, Sega Sammy is projecting total game software sales of 6.7 million copies in Japan, 6.3 million in the U.S., and 8.9 million in Europe, for a total of over 21.9 million copies. The company forecasts consolidated net sales of ¥682 million ($6.2m), up 23.3 percent year on year, operating income of ¥124 million ($1.1m), an increase of 4.0%, and net income of ¥75 million ($681,238), a rise of 13.3 percent for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2007.

News: Virtual On Championship DVD
May 19, 2006, 03:09 PM
by ollie, via Enterbrain - [p]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In September of last year the mother of all Virtual On tournaments was held in Japan, dubbed rather comically as "We Are The Champions." It covered both Virtual On Oratorio Tangram (the Naomi iteration, MSBS 5.66 in case anyone is wondering) and Virtual On Force.

In February of this year enterbrain, in their infinite kindness, released a DVD covering the event. Despite the somewhat psychotic commentary (which can thankfully be turned off), it is an insightful piece of gaming documentation. After all, you get to see the supposed top players of the Virtual On craft busting out their truly mad skillz.

It is a small mercy, however, that upon trouncing their opposition, the victors don't freak out monkey style but instead start crying with tears of joy. For those that know/care/understand the winner of the Oratan tournament (the proper one mind, Force is a game made predominantly for cackhanded wusses) was a Cypher player and his rival even more surprisingly was a Grysvok player. After all these years, who would have thought the portly missile wielding robot would have actually made it to a proper final...
