Neowangy c'est un roxxor.

C'est trop d'honneur...... mais c'est vrai

Merci a toi Mr Neo...
SNK le TIME RELEASE VOUS CONNAISER PAS!!!
I just got back from the location test of The King of Fighters XI: SNK Playmore’s latest offering in the long line of KOF games. Here is what I found.
Saturday the 14th of May. Club SEGA, Akihabara
Firstly, for those concerned about the graphics, the sprites are not redrawn. In fact, most of them seem very close to their KOF 2003 version. However, fear not, as this looks set to be an excellent addtion to the series.
Initial impressions
After hearing rumours I was looking forward to seeing some newly drawn sprites, but I soon found out that the rumours were nonsense. Pretty much all of the characters are lifted straight from their 2003 version with some new animation here and there. Before long though this didn’t matter, as the game itself seemed pretty impressive.
Firstly, Oswald, one of the three new characters that could be found, is superb. He is just so SNK. I describe him as a kind of cross between Seth, K’, and Iori. He is quite a tall character, and wears a dark suit, red shirt, and yellow tie. He uses what appear to be playing cards as weapons, although the cards themselves seem to be blank. His fighting style is very unique, and just looks really cool. When doing most attacks he brandishes a card in each hand, but the rest of the time the cards are nowhere to be seen. He is animated really well, and is very distinctive. I am really impressed with this character.
His super (presumably ‘Joker’), sees him dash forward and push the opponent to the far wall rather like that move of Rugal’s. Then, he steps back, three cards appear in each hand, the screen goes dark and he does a hail of slashes with the cards. Once finished he does a nice little finishing animation (could just be his normal taunt, I don’t know). Either way, it is very, very cool.
The backgrounds are genrally very nice, and the presentation is really nice. A few weeks ago I went to the Samurai Spirits Tenka loc test and came away pretty disappointed, but I came away from the KOF XI test really excited.
Roster
Three new characters could be seen: Oswald, Elisabeth, and Momoko.
I have written enough about Oswald for the time being. He was a very popular character, and despite his odd fighting style seems to be pretty easy to get used to.
Elisabeth was available for selection. She kind of reminds me of Karuma Mei from the Gyakuten Saiban series. That probably means nothing to you. She has what appears to be a horse whip for a weapon, but she keeps it in a sheath by her side when not in use. Kind of a cross between a horse whip and a sword I guess. Some of her special moves seem to use ice, or some kind of white energy. Not quite sure, but one of her supers involves firing a barrage of this at the opponent, which seems to hit long range and do a fair bit of damage. Not many people used her, so I didn’t get to see that much.
Momoko also appeared on the character selection screen, but either no one picked her or she wasn’t available as a playable character. She doesn’t appear on the movelist sheet either.
Old characters that are either new to KOF, or haven’t shown their faces for a while:
B Jenet, Duck King, Eiji, Ramon, Whip, and Kula. Think that is it, there may be others.
B Jenet was a popular selection, and seemed to blend well with the KOF environment.
Didn’t get to see Duck King, Eiji, Ramon, or Whip. None of them appear on the movelist either, so it is probable they were not available for play: their faces were, however, present on the character select screen.
Kula seemed fairly similar to her previous appearances.
Full list of characters that appear on the movelist sheet (other characters are in the game, but don’t appear on the sheet):
Ash
Oswald
Shen
Elisabeth
Benimaru
Kyo
Shingo
Terry
Kim
K’
Kula
Ryo
Yuri
King
Athena
Griffon
Ralph
Clark
Vanessa
Blue Mary
Gato
B Jenet
Marin
Kasumi
Taking all things into account I think this list represents the characters that were available to play during the test, but is by no means a complete list of characters. I would say that Oswald, Benimaru, and Kim were the three most frequently used.
Iori was nowhere to be seen, which is fine by me. I like the character, but it is time he took a break.
Adel is in there as a boss: probably a sub boss. One of the cabinets was running in story mode.
I saw someone beat it in story mode, but from a distance. The boss seemed to be female, with long hair in pigtails(?). She seemed to be making a lot of movement with her hands, and it all seemed involve a lot of animation. Don’t know to be sure as I didn’t have a clear view.
Visuals
While eye candy doesn’t make a good game, people do have certain expectations about this game due to it running on the Atomiswave hardware.
I have already mentioned the sprites. All returning characters that I saw look very close to their KOF 2003 version. In some cases there may be new/added animation. For example, Kyo seemed to have a few new tricks up his sleeve. Not many people used him, so I am not certain whether they were simply new moves, or reanimated versions of old moves.
Presentation overall is very, very nice. I really liked it. Lots of themes based on circles, and you can see some of that from the photos from the movelist.
As mentioned before, the backgrounds all looked very nice. Not tons of activity in them, but generally very good. Here are a few of the ones I can remember:
Aqueduct: takes place on tiled roof tops in what I suppose could be a European town. A large aqueduct can be seen in the background. Not much animation, but looked good.
Beach: some kind of military site on the coast. On the left side you can see some soldiers and jeeps, while over to the right is the beach. Again, looked nice.
Temple: similar to the temple stage from NGBC. The fight takes place on tatami with elaborately decorated panels in the background. A bunch of animated characters wipe the temple floor over on the right hand side. Thumbs up.
Alley: a good old fashioned back street alley. Not a million miles from the one in KOF ‘99. Not much going on. Seemed fine.
Ruins: some kind of ancient ruin. This is the one I liked the least.
Ice Festival: action takes place on ice surrounded by ice sculptures with an alpine mountain range in the background. OK.
?: Can’t remember the name of this one, but it looked really nice. Lots of white buildings in a sunny environment. Possible supposed to be somewhere like Greece? Quite a lot going on in this one, with cars and people going by in the background.
Gameplay
I didn’t play it. The queues were huge, and I simply couldn’t face it. Still, I did watch it for a good while, and liked what I saw.
Firstly, it is cleary based on the 2003 system. Not much appears to have changed. You still pick a leader, who has access to a ‘Leader’ super. Most of these are performed with the 5th ‘E’ button.
The match is continuous, and the first player to KO all of the opponent’s team wins. If time runs out, the player who’s team has the most energy left (?) wins.
Tagging.
From what I could make out there are now 2 types of tag. One is a standard tag when you simply want to swap players. This seems quite slow. Then there is what appears to be a ‘combo’ tag where the character change is very fast. You seem to be able to ‘combo’ into a tag in this scenario. Even so, no one seemed to be making much use of this sytsem. People were swapping characters with the standard tag quite often though. One particularly cool example was when an Oswald player landed one of his supers, and then tagged characters just after the animation had finished.
Super cancels are in the game.
Other than that, it seemed close to 2003. Very fast and furious. Gameplay seemed very tight, and I didn’t see anything that did huge damage.
Overall
I came away pretty impressed. I, for one, don’t care if the sprites are old or not. The overall presentation was really good, and the roster also pretty impressive. On top of that Oswald is definitely one of the best characters I have seen for a long time.
Gameplay wise they don’t seem to have changed much, but if they can make a balanced, bug free game with this system it is going to be an excellent addition to the series. Can’t wait for it to be released.
